The honest answer: it depends — here's what on
No reputable contractor can quote your kitchen sight-unseen, but you deserve to understand what actually moves the number. In the Kansas City metro, kitchen remodels generally fall into three tiers:
- Cosmetic refresh — new countertops, backsplash, hardware, paint, and lighting while keeping the existing layout.
- Mid-range remodel — new cabinetry and counters, updated flooring, some new appliances, and minor layout tweaks.
- Full transformation — moving walls, relocating plumbing or electrical, new everything, and opening the kitchen to adjacent rooms.
What drives the price
1. Layout changes. Moving plumbing, gas, or load-bearing walls adds cost fast. Keeping the existing footprint is the single biggest way to control budget.
2. Cabinetry. This is usually the largest line item. Stock, semi-custom, and custom cabinets span a wide range.
3. Countertops. Material and square footage matter — laminate, butcher block, granite, and quartz are very different price points.
4. Hidden conditions. Older KC-metro homes sometimes hide outdated wiring, plumbing, or water damage behind the walls. A good contractor builds a realistic contingency into the conversation.
